iPod Nano irrevocably ruined according to the unimportant opinion of one Apple fan

I wasn’t going to post about Apple’s announcements today because everyone else is doing that (see The Register: Apple goes iPod mad) and I didn’t think I had any particular opinions about it.

Which is to say, I thought, “I’m disappointed that we’ve yet to see Teh All New Utterly Uber Amazing iPod that geeks have been fantasising about since, well, since what seems like forever, but, meh”.

However, I went to have a look at the online Apple store and recoiled in horror.

They messed with the Nano. The sacred Nano. The beautiful, beautiful Nano. Oh, Apple, why must you break my heart, mercilessly toying with me as cats do with mice? Why? Why?!

    iPod Nano

I don’t like the finish, taken from the iPod Mini, especially not the edges - where the horrid flat top & bottom meet the sides. Bleurgh. Sorry, I’m a (demi-)geek; I overreact to tech.

    (Over-)dramatic sigh

PS: iPod Shuffle now pretty cool, although really not quite cool enough…

When Steve Jobs was describing the new toys, did he honestly say that the iPod was the best media player in the world?

      *boggles*

    2. Er, I dunno; did he?

I’m confused now because my sensors tell me you’re being sarcastic, but you can’t be really because the iPod is the God of All.

Well, of all MP3 jukeboxes anyways. :)

Hah - I was being sarcastic - your sensors are working fine :p

The iPod’s certainly very pretty, but in terms of features there are many other portable media players I’d prefer.

    4. I haven’t tried any other MP3 players or jukeboxes, so I’m not really qualified to review them. I love the design & aesthetics of the iPod and it has all the functionality & features I need. Plus, it uses iTunes, which I feel is superior to MusicMatch & Windows Media Player. Ergo, iPod = best. Of course, I would say that, being an Apple fangirl. :)

That’s why it’s so distressing that they’ve change the Nano (which was so beautiful), to be more like the Mini (which I hated). The only consolation is that the battery life is now great (24 hours!) and they have it in fuchsia. Still, can’t get over the horrible sharp corners. Sigh.

Incidentally, when are they going to bring out the new, all-singing, all-dancing iPod? The geeks have been prophesying for AGES. Apple have been stalling so long, I’m starting to suspect there isn’t one… What I think they’re doing is waiting for the hype to die down, maybe. Well, that’s what I hope they’re doing.

      *is on edge*

PS: I’m liking the look of Microsoft’s Zune player. (Ooh, irony). Waiting to hear how much it’ll cost before I pass judgement. Don’t suppose it will work with iTunes… that would be super-cool.
