Enjoy food as you age, more or less
Friday, 22 September 2006 @ 11:58am by Kathleen
No wife can cook as well as her mother-in-law, because as you grow older your palate becomes more critical and you no longer enjoy food as much as once you did.
– Some psychologist, as quoted by my dad.
Poppycock.
(I prefer calling ‘poppycock’ to ‘bullsh*t’ because it’s simultaneously funnier & more polite).
I choose to believe that the refinement of taste, as one matures, means we’re able to enjoy food more too, not just less.
How else can you explain my trying new foods and - shock! horror! - liking them?!

I totally agree with you.
As someone who has grown old and seen how much my palate has refined, I can categorically state that it makes you *want* better food (even reminiscing for food you’ve had in the past), and you do indeed enjoy food as much if not more.
If nothing else, I find I can analyse food more now, and that makes me appreciate it all the more.
Phew, that’s a relief.
Sometimes I hear negative ideas and for a brief moment I think, ‘Ooh, all I have to look forward to is mushy peas (admittedly, I love mushy peas, but is nice to have other things too on occassion!)’.
Then I think, ‘Bah! Peope are far too pessimistic, let’s add a good dose of positivity and believe the edited version instead’.
Seems to be serving me well; helps a lot when people agree with me. :)
